Unbraked swivel castor for 4-wheel waste containers, 200 kg per castor
The 160 mm swivel castor without brake is the running wheel of a 660 to 1100 litre container; it is normally fitted as a pair with two braked castors of the same series. It carries 200 kg at 4 km/h (250 kg static), is 200 mm high with a 50 mm offset, and mounts on a 135 x 108 mm top plate with 105 x 80 mm hole spacing and 11 mm bolt holes.
Black rubber tyre on a polypropylene centre
The 80 Shore A rubber tyre runs quietly on asphalt and grips a wet ramp between -20 and +70 °C (rated load between 0 and +30 °C; -30 to +80 °C for 10 minutes). The injection-moulded polypropylene centre keeps the castor at 1.62 kg, does not corrode and does not mark a painted chassis. For containers that are lifted and dropped by a collection vehicle every day we recommend the version with a zinc-plated steel rim; it takes mis-aligned lifts better.
Plain bearing, chosen on purpose
Waste containers stand outside, are pushed by hand and roll a few hundred metres a day. A plain bearing has nothing to seize up and needs no grease. Order the roller bearing version of this castor when containers are towed in trains or moved over longer distances.
Kerbs, obstacles and the EN 840-5 test
The rated load of a castor is measured under EN 12532 on a rotating test bench at 4 km/h, with obstacles of up to 5 % of the wheel diameter, so 8 mm for this 160 mm wheel. Larger obstacles are usually no problem in daily use, but every kerb or cobble above that height lowers the dynamic load capacity, which is one reason to choose the larger wheel for 1100 litre containers. EN 840-5 then tests the complete container: filled to 0.4 kg per litre (440 kg for an 1100 L bin) it is driven into a 140 mm kerb at 1.85 m/s eight times, followed by the brake and wheel tests. The castor must come through this with its housing, axle and brake intact. Test references for the container model you build are available on request.
When to choose the 200 mm version
The 160 mm wheel is the standard on 660 and 770 litre containers. For 1100 litre containers that are regularly filled to their 440 kg rated load, or that cross kerbs and cobbles, take the 200 mm castor of the same series: 250 kg per castor, lower rolling resistance over obstacles, same plate pattern. The housing is pressed steel, zinc plated, with a double ball race in the swivel head and a directional lock available as an option; the zinc plating is chromium VI free (EU directive 2000/53/EC, RoHS).
